Stratford-upon-Avon
Stratford-upon-Avon
Stratford-upon-Avon is a small market town in the middle of beautiful English countryside. It’s near other interesting towns such as Warwick and Kenilworth with their famous castles, and Royal Leamington Spa. Stratford-upon-Avon has many attractions including historic buildings, boating on the River Avon, and walking, and of course it’s also world famous as the home of William Shakespeare.
When you arrive, visit the Shakespeare Centre. It’s in Henley Street. The centre has special exhibitions on Shakespeare’s life and work. It also gives information about the different Shakespeare attractions in Stratford.
There are five Shakespeare houses to visit. Each offers fascinating details about Shakespeare and his family.
• Shakespeare’s Birthplace is famous for its exhibition – William Shakespeare: His life and times.
• Hall’s Croft has displays on medicine of the time and fine Elizabethan and Jacobean furniture. It also has a beautiful walled garden.
• Anne Hathaway’s Cottage has a charming garden and is particularly pretty in spring.
• New Place has a fascinating collection of Tudor furniture and displays on local history.
• Mary Arden’s House is now a farm and a museum.
The best way to see Stratford-upon-Avon and all five Shakespeare houses is by Guide Friday Tours. The tour lasts one hour. You can buy tickets on the bus itself or at the Guide Friday Tourism Centre.
